How to choose a free cross stitch pattern
The patterns in this catalog range from 15 to 300 stitches wide and use between 2 and 48 DMC colors. Start with the level filter: an easy chart is an afternoon project, and an advanced one is a full picture that runs over several A4 pages.
There are three kinds of patterns. Original designs and video game pixel art stitch fast because one pixel of the artwork is one stitch, and the blank squares stay unstitched. Patterns made from photos, such as pets, portraits, houses and quotes, fill the fabric edge to edge and take longer. All come as a PDF with a cover, a thread legend and a symbol chart.
Which level should you start with?
Levels come from the real size of each chart, not a guess: the stitches and colors of the patterns on this page.
- Easy
- 31 patterns · 165–704 stitches · 2–8 DMC colors · up to 30 stitches wide.
- Start here for a first chart or a small, uncomplicated project; the chart takes a single A4 page.
- Medium
- 35 patterns · 353–18,000 stitches · 3–17 DMC colors · up to 150 stitches wide.
- More colors and detail; the chart takes 1–6 A4 pages.
- Advanced
- 11 patterns · 5,399–72,000 stitches · 21–48 DMC colors · up to 300 stitches wide.
- Full scenes and pictures: the chart takes 6–24 A4 pages, and a minimap on each page shows where you are.
How to stitch a free pattern
- Print on A4Open the PDF and print at 100%, not “fit to page”, so the grid keeps its scale.
- Gather the threadsThe legend lists every DMC thread with its symbol, code, color name and stitch count.
- Choose your fabricThe cover shows the finished size on Aida 14, 16 and 18, so you know what to cut.
Frequently asked questions
Are these cross stitch patterns free?
Yes. All 77 PDFs on this page download without a sign-up and without payment.
What is inside each PDF?
A cover with the stitch and color counts and the finished size on Aida 14, 16 and 18, the DMC thread legend, and the chart pages with symbols on the thread color, a bold grid every 10 stitches and coordinates.
Which threads and fabric do I need?
DMC floss, the colors listed in each pattern’s legend, and Aida cloth. The cover of each PDF shows the finished size on Aida 14, 16 and 18; the charts work on any count, only the size changes.
Which pattern is best for a beginner?
One of the 31 easy patterns: they are at most 30 stitches wide and use 8 colors or fewer. Use the level filter to see them.
What is the ID on each pattern?
Every pattern has a permanent ID such as p0007, which starts the PDF file name. It stays the same even if we rename the pattern, so you can quote it or find the same file again later.
Is the video game art official?
No. The video game patterns are original fan designs drawn as pixel art with generic motifs such as crops, animals and houses. They are not sprites from the games and are not affiliated with or endorsed by their creators.
Can I get a pattern from my own image?
Yes. Upload a photo or your own pixel art to the pattern maker, set the width in stitches and the number of colors, and preview it for free. Each new pattern costs 1 credit, and you get 1 free credit when you sign up with Google.
Download the pattern you like, or turn your own picture into a cross stitch chart: the preview is free and you need no card to start.
